Blues with Duke JonesAcoustic music is alive and well at the Yale Street Market We had a great day of music at the January market. The Kim Saltzman Trio (Kim Saltzman, Miko Nelson and Richard Hinojosa) opened the show with a variety of original songs of love loss and separation. Kim has a strong voice and she is a talented and captivating performer. Her songs seem to be informed by a wealth of experience that is unusual for someone so young and cute. Richard layed down a steady groove on the conga while Miko complemented Kim’s guitar with
her own persuasive fretwork and backing vocals. The band sounded tight and they gave an emotionally moving performance. Kim has a sound all her own and a distinctive style but comparisons to Alanis Morriset, Natalie Merchant and Sheryl Crow come to mind. Carrie Ann Buchanan came onstage in the afternoon with her battered Martin acoustic and proceeded to do what she does so well, turning in a seamless set of heartfelt and funny ballads, wearing a pink feather boa no less. Her voice floated out into the air like it had wings and was backed up by her impressive guitar chops. I would make the comparison to Carol King, Linda Rondstadt or Patsy Cline although Carrie Ann may take issue with that, because she is definitely her own person. She plays regularly at Dan Electro’s in the Heights and you can catch her show on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00. You can Check out her website here. I’m Duke Jones and I’m the sound man and resident blues guitar picker for the Yale Street Market. I wouldn’t mind being compared to Juke Boy Bonner, Harlem Slim or Gary Dorsey although I don’t know if I measure up to it. Sean Walters lets me set in with him from time to time and I consider that an honor. I’m trying to keep alive the music of Sam “Lightnin’ Hopkins and I keep running into people from Houston who don’t know who he is. I still have a lot of work to do. If you want to know more about Lightnin’ Hopkins you can start here; http://www.houstonculture.org/cr/lightnin.html I also do a number of standards and favorites and a few originals, that friends of mine have written. If you want to know more about me you can go to my website; http://www.bluedukemusic.com/ Duke Jones is a phenomenal rhythm and blues musician.
