The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo......is not just about rodeos, and livestock, and calf scrambles, and wagon races, and entertainers. It’s about raising money for youth and education!Since its inception in 1932, the Houston Livestock and Rodeo (a Section 501(c)(3) charitable organization) has committed more than $220 million to the youth of Texas. Since presenting the first scholarship in 1957, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has committed more than $100 million in educational support to more than 20,000 Texas students. Annually, the Show dedicates $8.4 million to scholarships and educational programs. To date, the Show has awarded more than $12 million to the Rodeo Institute for Teacher Excellence, which trains teachers to teach reading support skills to pre-K and elementary-aged children. It's also about the artThe School Art Program, which began in 1964, has received a total of 7 million entries. Each year, nearly 350,000 students are impacted by the Show through competitions, scholarships and more (including 91 Texas public school districts, over 50 private and parochial school within a 150 mile radius of Houston). Special tours for schools have allowed more than 23,000 students to have access to the largest agricultural classroom available. The School Art Auction began in 1996 as an experiment. Is there a way to not only showcase school art but also bring opportunity to better showcase our Texas young artists? The answer has been a resounding YES! The program raises money, as well as auctions the top 50 pieces of school art from Texas youth each year. Through this, the program is able to fund fifteen (15) $15,000 scholarships exclusively for school art, 120 Glassell Junior School Art Workshops, and 24 Western Art Academy Workshops. Last year, the auction brought more than $1.5 million to the program.
