Tribe Report -May 8, 2006Martin de Vore ![]() One Minute Martinizing Salutations. I was going to indulge in a bit of my usual iconoclastic banter here but I am going to save that for the next Tribe Report. In that upcoming edition, besides the usual fare, I am going to have a few words to say about the evolution of art marketing. But, that requires some more thought. I want to make sure that I express myself clearly on that subject. In the meantime though, there is something else that came to mind as I was making the art rounds during the past week. I have neglected many of you during the past four months so I just want to take a minute here to say how truly fortunate that I am to know, commiserate, work, laugh, share, party, debate, plan and celebrate with you all -- members of all our tribes. Every one of you. It's my honor to be associated with you in whatever capacity. Also, there are a few of you who I see more often and thus inflict myself upon on a more regular basis. So, I thought I'd begin this Tribe Report by thanking you personally. So, my thanks to you Sorange, Michael-Ann, Gordy, Mitch, Carolyn, Marie, John, Carrie, Charity, Tim, Jerrie, Vera, Alexis, Lacey, Amy, Michelle, Masoud, Thermy, Sunjay, Phillip, Mandy, Lillibeth, Julie, Susan, Terrence, Aimi, Laura, Duke, Dwight, Mary, Erica, Chris, Eric, Rico, Mark, Celeste, Coco, Amy, Alix, Alex, Phyllis, Eric, Rachel, Maranda, Ocean, Jeff, Gus, Wayne, Mike, Norma, Jill, Dune, Nathaniel, Xsemaj, Heidi, David, Sergio, Richard, Van and Suzanne. Thanks so much for everything during the past year! Now...let's get on with the business at hand.... Zarate's Back Lately, Julie Zarate has been sort of like a comet -- she appears briefly and then disappears for awhile only to reappear even more brilliantly. On May 25, Julie will be one of three featured artists in TR3S: A Collective In Color at Muse Gallery located at 2020 Commerce, Suite G, in Houston. The exhibit will present thirty works by Julie Zarate, Armando Castelan and Christian Navarrete. The opening festivities run from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. and will feature musical performances by Maldito Sol (featuring Mark Pinon}, Program, and the debut of The Umbrella Man (featuring members of Los Skarnales and Sean Reefer and the Resin Valley Boys). For more information on the show, visit the Web site at http://www.myspace.com/tr3s_collective. For more information on Julie's work, visit her site at http://www.six06.com/. Glad that you're back Jullie! Congratulations Alexis For those of you who didn't know, our fellow tribester Alexis Andrei officially announced her engagement on Friday. Congratulations Alexis! Chapterhouse Dune Dune Patten just e-mailed and wanted to let everyone know that he is now represented in New York by Reflect-Arts and in San Francisco by Parenti. He also has a show scheduled at Minna Gallery in San Francisco. I hope they have valet parking out there! Dune and his work will also be featured on LionEye TV's -- a Web-based television station -- in an artists' segment called Underground Spotlight. Filming will be on the 13th on location at various spots, including the Menil, where they were able to get clearance for filming. The feature will be "aired" online on the 15th at http://www.lioneyetv.com . In other news from Arrakis, Dune will be the subject of a four-page feature in Wet Paint Syndrome -- a Web-based magazine whose first issue is due out in June. And, Dune's work will be included in this year's TALA Gala, Monochrome, June 2nd, honoring Shawn Wallis, 2006 TALA Artist of the Year, at the University of Houston's Gerald D. Hines School of Architecture from 8 p.m. to midnight. Wow Dune...I guess the spice melange worked after all! Dune has lots of Web sites but http://www.dunespirit.8m.com/ should allow you to find out more about his many projects. Oh, and by the way Dune...I am still looking forward to that bowl of grits! Overlord Mitch's NEXT Bacchanalian Frenzy Overlord Mitch has yielded to popular demand and announced one of his WEDNESDAY night Bacchanalian Frenzies at Onion Creek (3106 White Oak in The Heights) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. on the deck. To thank our Overlord for this most generous gesture, e-mail Mitch at artistsatlarge@gmail.com and let him know that his thirsty and hungry subjects appreciate it. Friday Night Foraging Friday night on 19th Street found several members of the Yale Street Arts Market tribe greeting the public in the Market's home at the Wind Water Gallery parking lot as part of the Heights Spring Fling festivities. Among those relaxing under the tent were Mitch, Eric, Duke, Michelle and Masoud. Shortly after I arrived at about 7:45, Eric Salazar and I walked down 19th Street -- foraging and visiting -- and achieved some success in obtaining food and drink for the evening. Along the way, we encountered Phillip, Mandy, Matt, Sam and Mike. Then, it was back to Wind Water Gallery to begin planning out the next day's Yale Street Arts Market. Another Saturday Night Saturday began under wet gray skies with a wash-out of the Yale Street Arts Market in the morning. After about an hour of fielding cell phone calls, Mitch decided that discretion was the better part of valor and headed off to Onion Creek where I joined him for coffee and art talk. Mostly, the art talk concerned upcoming shows, the Yale Street Arts Market's summer evening hours, publicity, and the whereabouts of certain tribe members. Following a few hours of such intriguing conversation, we headed back to 19th Street. We dropped in for a quick visit to M2 Gallery and talked with Max about his upcoming exhibition schedule. I also briefly got to chat with Phillip at Earth Gallery about Phil DeVille and Mustang Lightning's back up podcast PUNKAST which made it into the top 100 podcast on April 30, ranking at number 78. Way to go! Saturday night, I (like so many others) attended the combined opening night shows at g Gallery, Redbud and Texas Collaborative at their tabernacle of art in the 300 block of 11th Street. Well, as you might expect, the art was very diverse -- and very interesting. The crowd was huge and consistently maintained its mass throughout the evening. At g Gallery (also known to some as The G Spot or Wayne's World), Wayne Gilbert was greeting guests at the door and being the congenial host and gallery guide. On view for the evening: Worn In - The Patrick Medrano and Katy Anderson Show. A must-see show! For more information about this show and future events, call (713) 802-9466 or go to http://www.redbudgallery.com/gGalleryIndex.html on the Web. Passing through the g Gallery door to Redbud Gallery, visitors were warmly greeted by Gus Kopriva who was proudly showing off the art of Susan Henderson's exhibit, Dream a Little Dream. And yes, I overindulged in the famous Kopriva cookies. Tribe members on hand for the evening (that I actually got to say hello to) included Wayne, Gus, Dan, Sharon, Marie, Anila, Mitch, Mike, Norma, Maranda, Max, Michael, Ocean and Xsemaj. For more information on the Susan Henderson exhibit or future Redbud events, call (713) 862-2532 or visit Redbud's Web site at http://www.redbudgallery.com. Exiting Redbud's hall, I next entered the magical workspace of Texas Collaborative. After chatting a few minutes with Dan Mitchell Allison, I viewed some excellent work by Patrick Palmer, Kelly Moran and Nancy Reddin Kienholz. And, of course, some great work by Dan. For more information about Texas Collaborative's services or upcoming projects, check out their Web site at http://www.texascollaborative.com or call (832) 618-1845. For my final destination of the evening, I ambled past the tables laden with soft drinks and Kopriva cookies (and brownies) and proceeded to Sharon Kopriva's studio. As always, Sharon was there discussing her art. My favorite was the art car parade "vehicle" with its osteoframework skeleton. Wait until you see it! No bones about it, it's a treat. Sunday Afternoon on the Asphalt Sunday found me forced to work in Kingwood for most of the day while the Yale Street Arts Market attempted to resurrect itself like a phoenix from Saturday's transient deluge. When I arrived at the Market at about 3:30, the atmosphere was rather tranquil as the day was nearly over. I briefly got to visit with Mitch, Michael-Ann, Erica, Eric, Aimi, Marilyn, Dori, Terrence and Susan. After an enjoyable hour, I departed. Sorry that I missed seeing Tim, Charity and Capt. Tillman. Maybe next time. Underway at The Studio Gallery: Joyce Howell You all know how much I love going to shows at The Studio Gallery on 19th Street. Last weekend was no exception as I attended the opening for Joyce Howell's plant installations and paintings on April 29. The show runs through May 20. Like all events at Marie Weichman's place, this was a great opening and it IS a great show so make an appointment to go see it! Do it now! As an added incentive, it may interest you all to know that Joyce's crowd terrorized my crowd when we were children in Albuquerque. Pssst...Joyce...you never did figure out who it really was that papered your house when you were at Sandia High School, did you? Hahahaaha! Seriously folks, this is nice work at a great venue. To make an appointment to see Joyce's work, call (713) 869-2551 or visit the Web site at http://www.mwstudiogallery.com/. Future Attractions Sippora Gallery Okay, so I am not Miss Cleo but I can safely predict that Sippora Gallery's Inspiration show on Saturday, May 13, should not be missed. Beginning at 6 p.m. and running through 9 p.m., Inspiration features the artwork of Carolyn Cohen, Maranda Pleasant, Ocean Pleasant, Jim Leen, and Dan Price. Each featured artist was given a camera to take photos of everything and anything they wanted. From these photos, the artists discovered creative inspiration. This exhibition explores not only the artworks each artist created, but also the photos from where the inspiration came from. It will be interesting. I guarantee it. Sippora shows always are. For more information on the Inspiration show or other upcoming events, call (713) 520-1085 or take a peek at the Sippora Web site at http://www.sippora.com/. Gallery 19 On May 13, after the Art Car Parade on Allen Parkway, join the Gallery 19 folks from 4 p.m. - 10 p.m. in the G19 Courtyard and enjoy live music, an artist market, food and libations. One week later, on Saturday, May 20, there will be an opening reception at 7 p.m. for a dual show featuring the work of Willie Moe and Nicole Bent that will run from May 20-26. Be there! For more information, call (713) 426-2414 or visit the Gallery 19 Web site at http://www.gallery19.org/. Coda Remember, I am not the Oracle at Delphi so if you have a show or event coming up that you want me to mention you have to send it to me at my NEW e-mail address that I currently check from work or the library or friends' houses. So, e-mail me at: mldevore@gmail.com That's it for now. Until then, keep creating art, viewing art, buying art and supporting your fellow artists of all tribes.
