Tribe Report Archives January 17, 2007Martin de Vore ![]() Heading toward Groundhog Day! Well, the year is moving along and the first wave of shows and openings is over, with more on the horizon. Next up... It's a "Wild Life" Art Show If I could talk to the animals, what would the animals say? If they lived here in Houston, they would probably say, "Get your ass over to Eastman-Smith Art Gallery for the It's a Wild Life Art Show." The show opens January 18, followed by an "Evening with the Artists" on January 26. Both events run from 6-10 p.m. and are open to the public. This is also a charity art show benefiting the Nature Conservancy of Texas through a silent auction of donated artwork. The Nature Conservancy of Texas is sending out 500 printed invitations and e-mails to their entire network for this event. Help Eastman-Smith Gallery support our native wildlife and the areas damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita! Director Stäcy Smith is still searching for artists to exhibit art for these shows. Call her at (832) 274-6810 to make an appointment to view the space. Eastman-Smith Art Gallery is located at 4920 Center Street in Houston. For more information about this show or future events, call or visit the Web site at http://www.eastmangallery.com . For the Love of Art Do you love art? I do. Do you love artists? I do. Oh, do I ever. Especially those from places like India, Venezuela, Arkansas, Houston and distant shores. So, For the Love of Art join me for this show at Gallery 19 on Saturday, January 20, from 8-11 p.m. There will be live music, poetry, live painting, etc… Victuals will include offerings from http://www.fruitzcheesecakes.com, as well as coffee, wine, etc…. Gallery 19 is located at 327 West 19th Street in The Heights. For more information, call (713) 426-2414 or e-mail g19heights@sbcglobal.net . Art Battle Looking for a good fight? OK. Then Gallery 19 is the place to be on Saturday, February 3, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. when the Gallery 19 artists present an "Art Battle." Even though it's not the National Hockey League, there will still be plenty of action. Artists wishing to participate should register by 3:30 p.m. and, yes, they can use their own supplies. Gallery 19 is located at 327 West 19th Street in The Heights. For more information, call (713) 426-2414 or e-mail g19heights@sbcglobal.net . Rojo Not in the mood for love? Ok, that's cool. But what about red? If the love of red art (but not red as in Lenin, Marx, Che, Fidel or Mao) is coursing through your body like red corpuscles, then check out Rojo (Gallery 19's second annual Red show) on Friday, Feb. 10, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Join Heidi and the many fine Gallery 19 artists as they deck out the entire gallery in red. I can't wait to see what Xsemaj comes up with for this show. Gallery 19 is located at 327 W. 19th Street in The Heights, (in between Yale and Ashland). For more information, call (713) 426-2414 , e-mail g19heights@sbcglobal.net or visit the Gallery 19 Web site at http://www.gallery19.org . Justice for All Many would say that the concept of "Justice for All" is unattainable in this day and age. See what the art world thinks about the subject on Saturday, February 10, from 7-10 p.m. at M2 Gallery in The Heights. It is the hope of the owners and friends of M2 Gallery that (in addition to viewing the art) all people will discuss the issues presented during the exhibition. Works will be on view from the February 7 opening date through February 18. M2 Gallery is located at 325 W. 19th Street in The Heights. For more information on this show, or other upcoming M2 events, visit the Web site at http://www.m2-houston.com/ or call (713) 861-6070. Protest/Dissent "Hell no, we won't go!" "The whole world is watching...the whole world is watching...." "We shall overcome...." Ah, the sounds of my younger days when the country was a boiling cauldron of protest and the voice of dissent rang out throughout the land. To learn more about protest and dissent, come to M2 Gallery on Friday, February 16, at 7 p.m., when Mary Mikel Stump, the gallery director of the JCM Art Gallery at Texas State University, will present a lecture on protest/dissent. Some works on display will be discussed in this lecture which is open to the public. M2 Gallery is located at 325 W. 19th Street in The Heights. For more information on this show, or other upcoming M2 events, visit the Web site at http://www.m2-houston.com/ or call (713) 861-6070. I think M2 owners Max Boyd Harrison and Michael Kubis should be applauded for stepping out of the box like this. Way to go guys! Passion Refaite Hmmmm.... Okay, Terrence, what the hell does Passion Refaite mean? And, how do you pronounce it? My ancestors may have crossed the English Channel on that glorious day of October 14, 1066 and crushed the Saxon dogs, but that doesn't mean I am fluent in French. And probably most of us aren't. At any rate, Elder Street Gallery's Passion Refaite looks to be another good show, whatever it means! Those of you who appreciate good art should come see for yourself on Saturday, February 17, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Elder Street Gallery, Suite 109 and also in Suite 305. Participating artists include: Alissa Fereday, Julian Palacios, Christian Perkins, Iskra Ivanova, Ludmila Ivanova, Susan Goettsche, Julia Sinelnikova, Mehak Bagai, Lolet Boutté and Victoria Lewelling. Music will be provided by Duke Jones. For more information on Elder Street Gallery or its upcoming events, visit the Web site at http://www.elderstreetartist.com/ , contact Terrence Boggs at (281) 250-4889 or e-mail terboggs@yahoo.com . Sacred Spaces and Beauty of the Everyday Aren't those kind of the same? Well, at least to a landscape painter. But maybe not to you. Judge for yourself. Come to Earth Gallery and check out their February Group Show on Saturday, February 17, from 6-9 p.m. Phillip Tague and Mandy Tague describe it this way: "When we can appreciate and see beauty in the everyday, we are making the most of the possibilities around us. When we create sacred spaces, we are healing and nurturing ... making the most of ourselves. This shows artist motivation and works are about Sacred Spaces and the Beauty of Everyday Life." Featuring the work of Sarah Hazel, Shirley Bianchi, Leslie Entsminger, Monique Weston and critically acclaimed Russian artist, Yaver Sultanov, the festivities concide with the new moon and eve of the Chinese New Year! Earth Gallery is located at 365 W. 19th Street in The Heights. For more information about Sacred Spaces and Beauty of the Everyday visit the Web site at http://www.earthgalleryonline.com or call (713) 880-2121. What's that sound...can it be...? Tribal Drums The tribal drums have been beating. Incessantly. Here's what the drums have said over the last week.... From Wayne Gilbert: "I would like to invite everybody to check out a kool deal... Looking At Art begins its next 5-week tours:
To reserve a space, send your check for $70 to: Looking At Art, P.O. Box 131286, Houston, TX, 77219-1286. You will receive confirmation by mail, including information on where the first class will meet. For more information, call Victoria Lightman at (713) 868-9589 or e-mail lookatart@aol.com or check the Web site at http://www.lookingatart.com ." From Overlord Mitch Cohen: "Howdy Tribesters! I know I should be writing from my own column Mitch Notes, but I guess I've been busy, lazy or both! Its time for another happy hour I think, so let me know your thoughts on that. Coming up at Yale Street we have a few changes in store. I've got Smythe & Taylor performing in February, April and May at 1 p.m. and Mimi Durango of Sister Sister performing in March for the market's 3-year anniversary! I can't believe it's been 3 years already. Duke Jones will continue to perform in the afternoons too. With the help of graphic designer Mike Dunn, we've got a new marketing plan in place and have begun placing new ads in local magazines. The new ads, posters and post cards focus more on the fine art. I'd like to do a whole series featuring different works of art in a gallery poster style. Check out our first on in the next My Table Magazine for February-March. If you're a regular and are interested in your work being featured let me know! Here on Art Valet, I made a few changes to the sidebar links. They are the same now on the artists' site and the main pages. I also deleted a few pages that weren't getting used often. Remember, this site is open source which means you can edit and add your own content whenever you like! Just drop me a line and I'll fill you in on the details. Be sure to check out Keith Hollingsworth's show and Yale Street Market regular Jonatan Lopez this week. Both are listed on the Events page. Speaking of the Events page, the new form is working out very well. Be sure to post your event on there! Cheers! E-mail me at: hey@artvalet.com." Do you have something you'd like to send along? If so, get out those digital drums and e-mail me at: mldevore@gmail.com . OK, back to the business at hand.... Odds and Ends If you have 18 odds and ends on a table and 17 of them fall off, what do you have left, an odd or an end? I don't know but I do know this.... Dune Patten is uncharacteristically quiet these days. When's the next movie, Dune? And what about my grits? For the record, I really miss The Studio Gallery and Sippora Gallery. Just writing what many feel. John Mercado is one of those genuine nice guys. You sometimes hear about them, but rarely meet them in person. John is all that and more. And he is a fine painter. If this was the Star Wars universe, John would be a Jedi. I would probably be a Sith Lord. I am still waiting to get gooed by Lacey Crawford. And drawn. And vice versa. I think Rosie Phillips may be Ray Phillips' secret weapon. Together, they are one hell of a team. Gus.... the frig works just fine. The tradition continues.... I think several of the Post-Diversionists might paint it. Each will paint a side. Marie Weichman doesn't age. Somewhere in her studio, she has her own version of The Picture of Dorian Gray. But of Marie, instead of Dorian. Or maybe Chloe is a familiar spirit. Who knows? Two venues are STILL looking for artists for upcoming shows: Earth Gallery and Lynn Michaels Salon River Oaks. Earth Gallery is looking for artists wishing to exhibit there. For more information about making an appointment to show your portfolio at Earth Gallery, contact Phillip Tague at (713) 880-2121 or e-mail him at: earthgallery@sbcglobal.net . Lynn Michaels has two shows he's planning. One will be in mid February. The other is in March. For more information on appearing in an upcoming show at Lynn Michaels Salon River Oaks, contact Lynn at (713) 621-7424 or e-mail him at: lynnmichaels28@peoplepc.com . Looking into History Back I didn't make any of the events this past weekend of January 13-14 due to a prior commitment. Sorry about that. However, I did hear from many people that the Go - Figure show at M2 Gallery on Saturday, January 13, was a smashing success. Congratulations Max Boyd Harrison and Michael Kubis! Juried by Patrick Palmer, the exhibition will run through February 4. M2 Gallery is located at 325 W. 19th Street in The Heights. For more information on this show, or other upcoming M2 events, visit the Web site at http://www.m2-houston.com/ or call (713) 861-6070. A week earlier, on Saturday, January 6, I did manage to make the combined show at the Tabernacle of Art (Ggallery, Redbud Gallery and Texas Collaborative Arts) in the 300 block of 11th Street in The Heights. The art was good and the refreshments and treats were many. Taking in Angelbert Metoyer's "Royal Blue" at Ggallery, "Making Do" (which was curated by Jay Wehnert) at Redbud Gallery and "Smoke and Mirrors" featuring contemporary daguerreotypes by James Kanan at Texas Collaborative Arts, I came away from the evening with a reminder of just how diverse art can be. Tribe members I ran into included: Wayne, Gus, Dan, Sharon, Marie, Anila, Nathaniel, Xsemaj, Terry, Charity, Terrence and Susan. The shows will be up awhile longer. Go check them out. Check out the Ggallery Web site for more information about "Royal Blue" at http://www.ggalleryhouston.com/ or contact Ggallery's Wayne Gilbert at (713) 896-4770. For more information about Making Do, contact Gus Kopriva at (713) 862-2532 or visit the Redbud Web site at http://www.redbudgallery.com/ . For more information on "Smoke and Mirrors," please contact Dan Allison at (832) 618-1845 or e-mail him at: dan@texascollaborative.com . Following the show, we visited Xsemaj's studio to see what he is currently working on. It's a large piece that should be something to see when it's finished. His place also has quite a collection of art on the walls. Cool stuff, Xsemaj! Wednesday night, Mehak Bagai and I painted together for several hours. I completed a landscape of the Grand Canyon and Mehak knocked out three seascapes that were superb. I wish I had her speed and vision. Since October, Mehak has outproduced me nearly 5-to-1. That's not the way to treat one's mentor! And they are all different ... landscapes, seascapes, abstracts, art nouveau, illustrative art ... you name it. Better yet, they are all quite good. The next day, on Thursday, I stopped by Sorange Castillo's for awhile. She showed me what her next project would be. Without giving too much away, let it suffice to say that it will be a large pastel. And it will be worth the wait. During the past year, I have helped Sorange whenever I could because (1) I love her (but you all knew that anyway) and (2) more importantly, because I think she deserved the help to be able to create without some of the million pressures faced by many artists. I think she and her art are worth it. Sorange's talent has been more and more evident in each new work she creates, especially in pastel. But talent isn't everything. She has worked very hard to get where she is at now. And it shows. That is why I have helped her during the past year. She deserves it. And it's nice to see the results of that help in the growing number of shows her art is in. Monday night, I paid a call on Michael-Ann Belin at her house. While there, I also got to visit with Gordy Tillman and see what Mikie has been working on. We discussed some techical stuff and then started considering our next shows that we might submit to. I really like Mikie's new work. It sort of has a ''Renaissance" quality to it. "Michael-Ann-Gelo" has most definitely arrived! But then in my opinion, she "arrived" years ago. It has always been an honor to be in both The Diversionists and Post-Diversionists with her. I have learned so much from her and she has been watching out for me for a long time. That about covers it for the past two weeks' travels. Nuggets Here are some more Web sites that I think you should check out (in no particular order):
Look for more "Nuggets" in the next Tribe Report or in last week's Tribe Report in the Archives! Coda Remember, I am not the Amazing Kreskin, so if you have a show or event coming up that you want me to mention you have to send it to me at: mldevore@gmail.com That's it for now. Until then, keep creating art, viewing art, buying art and supporting your fellow artists of all tribes. Martin L. de Vore is an artist and journalist once again living in Humble. Martin is a member of the Artists At Large and Post-Diversionist tribes and is approaching another event horizon. |
