Art was always around me while growing up in Houston. Whether it was music, dancing, or painting (I personally am not a dancer, but family members are.), there was always a strong influence of the arts in my family. As a child,I used to listen to my parents sing and play the piano, watch my sisters and uncles perform in various venues, and watch my grandmother draw and paint. I am a strong believer in the idea that all arts go hand in hand, and many of the same rules apply across genres. Therefore, I think that through the talent that surrounded me, I was able to pick up and practice some of those rules.

I have always been a drummer and have even toured and recorded while teaching high school drum line. Over the years, I learned to take what I knew about music and rhythm and apply that knowledge to my art. I think it is funny that when you look at the paintings I create, they have the energy and colors of a drummer.

I have been painting for many years now, but when I was younger, I used to watch others paint landscapes and flowers with oils, and I thought that was what I was supposed to do as a painter. However, after failing miserably, I finally figured out that the only time I have fun with art is when I paint like I play drums: exaggerated and colorfully. I have also been able to adapt the use of shapes and concepts to my paintings through my career as a graphic designer. Many times in a design, I have to find the simplest way to convey an idea so being a designer has helped to not over-do a piece. The use of simple forms has made the images pop more with a smaller amount of lines.

Just like the essence of a poster is to translate an idea into a visual image, all of my artwork tells stories. Each one is either a situation that I have gone through or something that I feel. My whole purpose is to paint an image that people can relate to and is visually appealing, while still telling a story, so people can feel something, or be affected, when they look at my paintings.
