Lilibeth Andre

One of the things that intrigues people is how long it takes you to produce a painting. What draws me to paint is the beauty or attraction of my subject. The way it catches my eye and why. Then my challenge is to reproduce that image the way I saw it in that moment with my eyes or in my mind.

I like to use a variety of mediums to reflect the image as I see it, as I feel it. The image calls to the medium it requires. I also like to experiment with the medium to master its nuances. I typically use canvas, paper or board but I’ve been known to paint on different materials. I remember painting on egg shells once when I was doing a miniature series back in 1980.

Painting has become a gateway for me. I can step through it and I’m transported to a different world. In my journey I like to relish in what I see in this world and explore it in its vastness, detail or simplicity. The brush or pencil become my hand. I feel the curve of the figure, the texture of the tree trunk or the memories evoked by the landscape. When that special stroke brings it to life for me, I know I’m on the right track.

Before I know it, I have invested 4 or more hours in this exploration and I return to my reality. I get a drink or grab something to munch on and hurry back to step through the threshold one more time.
