Jerrie Glidden

I was born in Weslaco, Texas. I moved to Houston as a teenager and live now in Spring with my husband. Colors and nature have always been my great passion, and my desire that one day I would reflect its beauty and rainbow of colors in my paintings. As a young mother, I started my artistic training by studying oils for one year under the guidance of John Holloway.

In 1984, I moved to Singapore with my husband and two sons where we lived until 1991. This experience brought me a wider view of the world in which we live, its variety of people, cultures, landscapes, and beauty that I found traveling going east or west, north or south. After settling from the move, I continued to develop my skills through self study and began to generate a variety of paintings reflecting the flora, birds, and street scenes of the Far East. I was honored to have my first solo exhibition sponsored by Citibank of Singapore. I had my arm twisted by expatriate friends to conduct art classes for those children with an interest in learning art and this I found to be both a great joy in their learning and a very strong learning for the teacher as well. I participated in the Annual Fund Raiser benefiting the Singapore American School in the art section and was chairman for 3 years. In this capacity I was able to stimulate the participation of other schools on the island. I continued to paint and experimented in different media, but in the end I found that oils remained my favorite.

We then moved to Scotland in 1991, my husband being an oil industry junky. I exhibited my paintings at the Heatherford Gallery, Kinross Scotland, and several local art exhibitions. Scotland was a wonderful place and a rich source for inspiration in my work.

We returned home to Houston in 1997. I took pastel classes at the Houston Art League to try a change in medium and derived a major growth in my career as a painter, I found myself and my love in “Soft Pastels”. I feel that I have learned so much over time by studying the “Masters” and by visiting the museums and galleries around the world, at every opportunity. I am currently a member of the Houston Art League and of the Southeast Pastel Society. My paintings pepper the globe, and can be found in Japan, Norway, Spain, Australia, Great Britain, Singapore and the United States.

I encourage anyone with aspirations in art to give it a try. You might surprise yourself.

Henry David Thoreau said “The world is but a canvas to the Imagination“.
